Accountability in and of global governance

Summary:
In the almost 20 years since the establishment of the WTO, levels of transparency and participation
have increased significantly. Accountability, however, has not progressed nearly to the same extent. In the context of global governance the study of accountability requires paying attention not only to the internal accountability mechanisms of international organizations such as the WTO, but also to the ways individual states, corporations, NGOs, and civil society might participate in the exercise of accountability.
